The Springfield Armory XD-40 service pistol big brother to the higher capacity XD-9. Both pistols are produced on the same production line and share almost everything in common. This includes finish combinations, safety features, and included accessories.

While the 9mm cartridge is the most popular pistol round in the world, American shooters always had an affinity for the .45 ACP. The adage goes that if you want to win a gun fight, make sure your gun is chambered for a caliber that begins with a 4. This seemed to prove true when FBI agents found themselves struggling to win in the 1986 Miami Shootout. The question of wound balistics was brought up and eventually the Bureau began testing of the 10mm cartridge.

Eventually rejected because of the large amount of recoild, the ammo wizards at Smith & Wesson convinced the FBI that they could reduce the recoil and increase the capacity of the average service pistol by cutting down the case of the 10mm. Thus the .40 Smith & Wesson was born.

Since that time there has been a consistent debate as to whether the power of each individual shot or the overall capacity of the pistol is the more weighty factor in determining which gun is best. Willing to play to both sides of the debate, Springfield Armory brought both the XD-40 and XD-9 to market at the same time.

The .40 S&W version of the pistol ships with two 12 round magazines which is pretty much the only difference between the twin pistols. Both have striker-based single-action trigger systems. Both share identical safety systems which include internal firing pin blocks, trigger safeties, and grip safeties. Both feature dovetailed 3-dot combat sights as standard equipment with the ability to order the guns with night-sights from the factory. Both sport an integrated accessory rail.

I love this gun. I put a small SE laser on the rail.

I bought the Springfield Xd-40 because I did not like the ergonomics of the Glock models, but wanted the reliability and ruggedness. After doing research I felt comfortable buying the XD.

I am extremely happy with the gun. It is simple to use and clean. I believe it is too large to reasonably conceal, but ti isnt meant for that. It has performed flawlessly with most ammo and is my fav semi auot. My wife who is not a fan of guns was able to make the gun function adequatly from racking the slide to releasing it, firing and reloading. Its a big(er) round so it has a bit of recoil.

As a comparison I shot the S&W M&P 40 and the XD is a bit more “snappy” however i believe it has a slightly shorter barrel as well so its all even in my book. I love the “not overly obtrusive” safety features. The gun does not have to be “set” to shoot but you do need to be intending to shoot it for it to function due to grip and trigger safeties.

I have recommended this gun to all of my friends and will buy other XD models. Looking at the XDm now. It is a great firearm and if need be I would DEFINITELY trust my life with it.

I’ve owned my xd 40 for 5 yrs now and have never once had an issue with it. I’ve fired roughly 3000 rounds from it and have never had a jam, miss-feed or FTF. The finish hold up quite well even in a humid environment with little more then a lite oil coating before storage to protect it. Its accurate, on more then one trip to the range I’ve been able to hit a 12oz water bottle (roughly 2-1/2-3in target) at about 50yrds from a supported bench position. The only down side is it’s a bit “snappy” in .40cal possibly due to the slide sitting slightly higher on the frame. Over all it’s a great gun, I recommend it to everyone and would buy another any day.

I’ve owned my XD40 for a little over a year now. I went to my local gun shop with every intention of coming home with a glock. The guy showed me the XD and after feeling it in my hand I knew it was the one for me. I didn’t purchase it that day because I like to research things before I buy. 95% of what I’ve read on it sealed the deal for me. I went back a week later and bought it. I have the service model with 4″ barrel. I wanted a concealed carry weapon and picked up the compact model but the grip was to short for my hand. My service model ticks in my pants well and I wear an over shirt and you can’t tell I’m armed. It’s a little harder to pull off in hot weather though. Overall, I love the feel, fit, and function of the Springfield. Shoots straight and is very reliable. Paid a little over $500 for mine and I feel that was a great deal considering what I was getting. Absolutely love shooting and carrying it so if your in the market, you can’t go wrong with choosing the XD.
