Many would say that the Springfield Armory XDm 3.8 is a not a true compact pistol because, while the barrel length is shorter, the height remains virtually the same.
Regardless of this fact, the 9mm XDm 3.8 is bought by many who are looking for the functionality of a compact pistol but want the upgraded featuers that the reworked gun design offers.
That being the case, the XDm 3.8 compact pistol sheds a full inch in overall length when compared to the XDm-9 service pistol even though the barrel lenth only falls from 4.5" to 3.8". The grip of the gun, however, is not shortened in any way. In fact, the frames for the two guns are identical which has led many to comment that this gun is the "commander" version of the XDm lineup.
This is a significant enough difference for those who carry primarily for self defense and feel that the extra accuracy provided by the longer barrel is negligible in a short-range defensive shooting scenerio and sales have been strong since the introduction of the pistol. The size of the pistol is very close to that of the original XD-9 service pistol, but the gun does have the advantage of carrying 4 more rounds than original XD.
The 9mm XDm 3.8 retains all of the enhanced functionality of integral to this newer line of pistols including front and rear aggressive slide serations, removeable dovetail front and rear 3-dot combat sights, integrated accessory rail, new ergonomic grip design with easier access to the magazine release, and interchangeable backstrap inserts that provide a custom fit for large, medium, and small hand sizes. Magazine capactiy of this compact pistol is fully 19 rounds, giving it a large overall firepower base.
